Sherwin-Williams Duration vs. SuperPaint: Which Should You Buy?

Sherwin-Williams makes two of the most popular interior paints on the market, and both earn good reviews. Duration is the thicker, pricier premium option built for durability. SuperPaint is the better-covering value pick that handles most rooms well.

The question is whether Duration’s extra muscle is worth the extra cost for your project.

Most rooms do not need Duration.

Some do.

Short answer: SuperPaint covers more square feet per gallon and costs less, making it the smarter buy for most interior walls. Duration earns its premium in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and anywhere you want the thickest, most durable film money can buy.

Where They Are the Same

These two paints share more than the price gap suggests.

Both are self-priming, so you can skip a separate primer coat on most previously painted walls. Both come in more than 1,700 colors and both carry low-VOC formulas under 50 g/L.

Washability is strong on both. Duration is rated excellent; SuperPaint very good. For everyday cleaning, neither lets you down.

Both also have exterior versions, so you can match the brand outside if that matters.

The Differences That Decide It

Coverage

SuperPaint covers about 100 more square feet per gallon than Duration.

SuperPaint spreads 350 to 400 square feet per gallon. Duration covers 250 to 300. On a big room, you could need an extra gallon of Duration for the same wall.

That coverage gap narrows the price advantage but does not close it. You still spend less per square foot with SuperPaint in most cases.

Film and Moisture

Duration uses PermaLast technology to build a film about 70 percent thicker than a standard paint. That thicker film resists scuffs, dings, and wear better over time.

Duration also adds Moisture Resistant Technology. That makes it the stronger choice for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and any space with steam or humidity.

SuperPaint handles moisture well. It is just not engineered for it the way Duration is.

Price and Value

Duration runs about $80 to $85 per gallon. SuperPaint comes in at roughly $66 to $77. On a multi-room project, that difference adds up quickly.

SuperPaint also offers specialty formulas, including air-purifying and sanitizing versions. Duration does not. And SuperPaint adds a High Gloss finish, while Duration stops at Semi-Gloss.

Which Paint Goes Where

For most rooms, SuperPaint is the practical answer. For damp or high-wear spaces, Duration earns every extra dollar.

Use SuperPaint in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and hallways. The coverage is excellent, it washes well, and the lower price leaves room in the budget.

Use Duration in bathrooms and laundry rooms, where moisture resistance matters. It is also the better call for surfaces that take daily abuse.

Children’s rooms are a toss-up. SuperPaint’s sanitizing formula is appealing. Duration’s thicker film handles crayon scrubbing. Either works.

The Bottom Line

  • Choose Duration if you are painting a bathroom or laundry room, or you want the thickest, longest-lasting interior film Sherwin-Williams makes and low maintenance over many years.
  • Choose SuperPaint if you want the best coverage per gallon for a better price, you are painting general living spaces, or you want a High Gloss or specialty formula.

Alternatives Worth a Look

Want a step up from Duration? Sherwin-Williams Emerald sits one tier above, with better stain blocking and a more refined finish at a higher price.

In the premium category, Benjamin Moore Aura and Behr Marquee are the closest rivals, both with thick, durable films.

If you like SuperPaint’s value angle, Behr Premium Plus is a comparable, well-regarded pick.
